ABOUT ME
JavaScript and UX engineer
JavaScript and UX engineer

I build, I scale, I communicate, I deal. I’m a software engineer, a funk drummer, an entrepreneur, and a coding school teacher. To me, the more hats the better, from engineering to business to product to fedoras. I’m passionate about consumer facing applications and the experience that defines them. I don’t usually talk about astrology, but when I do, I brag that I’m a true Aries - highly motivated, driven, action-oriented, and open - ok so maybe I only brag about the better qualities. I strive to be aware, to learn from the people around me, and to boost those same people to success. I thrive in high-pressure, greenfield environments.

I have been using, teaching, and learning JavaScript in many different capacities over the last 6 years. Whether it's the new hot syntax, or the new hot framework, or the underlying wiring and best practices of the language, I have never stopped learning, challenging myself, and teaching JavaScript.

I picked up my first book on jQuery 7 years ago, and I was immediately infatuated with the ease and power of jQuery. Since then, I have studied the best practices, used jQuery in large scale applications, and taught classes on jQuery.

I got my start in web development on the front end 10 years ago, working only in HTML and CSS for a few years before even getting into JavaScript. When the HTML5 spec and then the CSS3 spec were released, I continually updated my use and understanding of new features, new philosophies, and new best practices. I like to adopt features on the cutting edge, while at the same time making sure I know the browser implications of doing so.

I have been using the Node environment to build web apps for a few years now. Whether it just be in the form of using NPM packages, or a more full scale Node/Express application, I typically use Node to compliment my client side applications.

I learned the client side version of MV* via learning backbone.js. I studied with some of the contributors of the backbone, went to backbone conferences, and was mentored by a backbone expert for over a year. All of that experience was what enabled me to start architecting and developing my own backbone applications from scratch when I joined a music tech start up as the founding engineer. I have since switched to using primarily React, but I still credit my experience with Backbone for giving me a deep understanding of client side web applications.
