I've built numerious systems based on MongoDB. I've done things from: - single instance, two- and three-instance replica sets and sharded clusters - ... on standard off-the-shelf servers, AWS, and Google Cloud Cluster - architected data structures for apps in various industries (connected cars, postcards, video-based social networks, invoices, ad servers) - built simple and compound indexes and queries - streamed and pulled data as a regular query, - recovered databases from backups, - built aggregation pipelines, - built mapReduce queries - and other things I cannot list. I'm mostly using Node.js as the application backend for all this, but have briefly tried other things.

I've started from simply plugging in Redis for use as a session store for PHP apps back in 00's. Later I've learned that Redis is insanely fast if you can do two things: - fit all the (relevant) data into RAM and - properly denormalize (duplicate) data. You can use effectively use Redis as a main database. Granted - you have to organize your app logic (or some LUA scripting), and you'll have some data duplication (e.g. for side-indexing of the actual data for constant-time access), but for a lot of applications, it's feasible. Maybe not always practical, but if you need to build something crazy-fast, you can definitely look if Redis is good enough.
