Experience Software Architect with a passion for teaching

I've been a software architect for years, working hands on to implement a wide range of applications both on the development side and the devops side. One of my favorite aspects of my job has been mentoring people less experienced with the technologies I love. I've recently started doing independent consulting work, and I'm looking for more opportunities to teach people who are eager to learn.

I've been working in Python continuously since 2.4 was the latest version. I know the inner workings of much of the language, and I know Django inside and out. I can troubleshoot even the trickiest issues in an unfamiliar codebase, and I can help you structure your projects to stay on the right track.

I've spent enough time with AngularJS to know it inside and out, from how to structure a project to the intricacies of its expression language. Before making the jump to Angular, I used jQuery extensively, and I'm familiar with the common gotchas. I've used Grunt for managing projects, and can help sort out issues with various task runners. Finally, I've done quite a bit with Node.js in addition to browser-based Javascript, and can help with common issues.

AWS has a vast service offering, and I have hands on experience with most of it. I've designed and deployed highly available, horizontally scalable service that run on EC2, with service configuration managed through CloudFormation. I've also contributed to Zappa, a framework for deploying Serverless Python applications. Lastly, I've used it to orchestrate large one-off computational jobs that need a lot of horsepower for just a few hours or days. I can help you troubleshoot small issues, or architect a full solution to meet your needs.

Git is an amazingly powerful code review tool, but it has a steep learning curve and can be hard to navigate. I've learned to navigate all sorts of merge conflicts, recover commits after an accidental reset, and much more. I'm even familiar with the on-disk format of the Git database for the more esoteric issues that come up.

Saltstack has a pretty steep learning curve, but I can help get you over the hump. I can help you simplify your server configurations with a master / minion topology. I can help you decide whether to use a Salt Master or go with masterless deployments, and can help you structure your formulas for a streamlined deployment process. I've gotten multiple companies to the point where provisioning a new environment is just a matter of standing up salt-minions with proper host names and calling highstate on the master. What used to be weeks of work can happen in half an hour.

Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of XML. It's a good spec, but it often gets used for purposes it was never intended for. It happens that one of my own mentors was on the W3C committee that defined the XML spec, so I have some rare insights to how it was designed and the problems it was meant to solve. I can also help you deal with XML efficiently, even when it's not being used as intended.
