Before smartphones were commonplace, I built a fully featured GPS application that imported topo maps from poorly cropped USGS pdf topo maps. It featured real-time location tracking using hand-built NMEA parsers, a trail of where you've been, dynamic tile-based topo map rendering of your surroundings, geo-fencing (before it existed elsewhere), logging location to files, and more.

I designed and built a robotic thermal camera scanner that I mounted to the back of a side-by-side for finding defects in solar panels in world-class solar power plants. It automatically pointed the right direction at all times, it automatically used the thermographs of the solar panels to detect problems, and it kept track of each and every panel it looked at in real time so it could automatically generate work orders. This was all done without specialized 3rd party libraries because no suitable libraries existed at the time that could work in the 16-bit grayscale image format we needed to use. I designed and built the hardware and software from scratch.
