Mostly use some form of ORMish type thing these days but I can sling SQL when I need to. Extremely complex queries point to unsustainable design flaws...so I approach things differently now. I've seen some very busy SQL statements written by developers very proud of themselves; I've been there. You're doing it wrong.

I'll make you a deal: You show me a create table statement and I'll tell you how many rows you can fit and how much memory you need along with how long your queries will take on *which* amazon ec2 instance type or digital ocean droplet type. Try me. I've seen it all.
