Award-winning data scientist

Hi!
I’m Déborah and I’m a data scientist. I have a BSc in Computer Science and I’ve been working with Data Science since 2016 when I won the Microsoft Imagine Machine Learning Award.

I’m a generalist, so I can grasp new technology quickly and I can learn as much as I need to reach the goals of a project. I think this gives me an advantage in writing because it’s easier for me to “zoom out” and explain things from a broader point of view than someone who has more experience in a particular technology.

Oh and there was a day where John Maeda used one of my articles to learn TensorFlow (haha yes, I’m indeed very proud of that so I had to put it here).

Project Goal The client was using a customer survey system where they did the interviews with pen and paper and later a worker had to input this data to the system. The goal of the client was to speed the the time from collecting data to generate the report, and use smartphones instead of pen and paper. The client also had to manually copy the images from the old system to create the reports using PowerPoint Solution Solution I did a lot of research and studied some alternatives to deliver the project in a reasonable time. I choose ODK Collect, an open source Android app for surveys and Google Sheets as the storage, because it was easier to the client access the data. The system automatically generates .pptx reports with data from Google Sheets. To do that I developed a Flask Application that reads the data from the sheets and uses Plotly to generate the chart images. To generate the PowerPoint reports I use the python-pptx library. The whole process of generating the reports is now automatic and the client is very happy with the result.

Project goal The customer had a WordPress website on a shared host that stores custom metadata in MySQL tables. The search widget only worked with Blog Posts and the goal was to make the search work for the metadata information as well. Solution Since the stack was limited and using Elasticsearch was not possible, and the MySQL full-text index only works with a single table, I created a table with all the metadata the user wanted to be searchable (including the blog posts) and added a full-text index using MySQL. Then I created a new search widget using PHP for displaying the results. Finally I created a procedure that updates this new table weekly, since the client don't add new data to the website every day.
