Built, ran, and maintained Flock's insurance platform and engineering team, overseeing the largest team within the business. Responsible for all aspects of technical strategy and delivery, Owned non functional requirements and responsibility for all aspects of technical due diligence. As the first non founding hire was responsible for establishing Flock's engineering ecosystem, and delivering the first product suite on an aggressive timeline.
- Built the first MVP - a mobile application written in React Native backed by NodeJS microservices and a Postgres database, integrating with numerous third party APIs for geodata (Google, IBM, Darksky) and services (e.g. Stripe)
- Set technical strategy, and helped influence company strategy by explaining business direction to technologists, and vice versa. Ultimately responsible for stakeholder management, non functional requirements, and technical due diligence in a heavily regulated space
- Introduced and drove engineering best practices - strict type adherence with Typescript, io-ts, and fp-ts, test coverage, continuous delivery to production on both the front end and back end, agile planning, technical debt categorization and other rituals to ensure high quality delivery on the fastest and most consistent cadence
- Worked closely with product to define the product and technical direction. Ultimately responsible for the definition and efficient breakdown of tasks, and for designing a system architecture to mimic complex, heavily regulated insurance processes, and processing customer money in an automated manner
- Expanded the engineering team aggressively, hiring, leading, and managing 10 software engineers, data scientists, and data engineers, as well as multiple external teams of contractors
