This is your business not your hobby

Published Nov 28, 2017Last updated Nov 29, 2017

I've had the opportunity to work with many different teams, projects and companies. I know It's always hard to make decisions about something you created and no longer works the way you hoped it would.

But creating a business is usually like this, we have problems and we need to solve them, leaving no time to think about yourself. After all, you are making a product for your clients, not for yourself. Otherwise it would be a hobby, not a business.

One thing that helped me along the process is to understand that I have a major expertise, software development, but my business will not strive just because of that. I have to find the courage to embrace this and learn about areas beyond development which complement my work. This way I can start to really solve the problems instead of sticking to what I already know.

Some expertises are useful in any area, such as marketing, design, sales, etc. It's much easier to be in your comfort zone and always think that your expertise will solve all the problems. It won't!

If you are uncomfortable doing something, ask for help, find a partner, but don't let your expertise get in the way of your business.

I've worked with teams mostly made up of developers or advertisers. We often got distracted from the real problems and created new ones that we knew how to solve just to get the feeling of moving forward. In reality, we weren't.

If you have a product, you must let go of your fear of the unknown and tackle the right problems. This will pave your way to strive as a business. Remember that your expertise is just a means to create the business, along with many others.
