How I learned Tensorflow

Published May 09, 2019

About me

I am currently a Senior at Upper Merion High School and have spent four years programming. I started out with JavaScript and making websites but now I mostly use python. I've taken numerous different computer classes at my school and have also taken college programming courses outside of my school in my free time.

Why I wanted to learn Tensorflow

I've always wanted to dabble in machine learning. I've always thought that the idea of a computer being able to pick out things from an image or to be able to think on it's own is fascinating and i wanted to be apart of the experience of teaching a computer to do something.

How I approached learning Tensorflow

In order to learn tensorflow, I spent months researching the background of Machine Learning and what the computer is actually doing in order to produce outputs.

Challenges I faced

During my journey into learning tensorflow, it was really tough keeping interested because machine learning has a bunch of heavy calculus and statistics in order for it to work.

Key takeaways

After learning some of tensorflow, it was really satisfying being able to apply my skills to a project. I applied it to make my own image recognizer that could tell if the thing inside the image is either a cat, dog, or neither.

Tips and advice

When trying to learn a machine learning framework, try to find a project that you can use it in. Try to make something practical instead of just copying generic online tutorials. Also use stack overflow if you have questions that you can't find the answer too!!!

Final thoughts and next steps

My next steps are to try and incorporate tensorflow models into iOS apps possibly using onnx and core-ml. I'm also going to try to learn a bit of PyTorch since it seems really user friendly
