Trends in Automated Web Testing in 2020

Most people think that automated testing doesn’t change that much over time. And that could be true in some sense because you’re always testing for the same things more or less. However, the advancements in technology and the development of new browsers or mobile technology bring the need of more advanced and in-depth testing. In today’s article, we’re going to take a close look at what 2020 brings to us in terms of automated web testing and which are the most prevalent trends that we already start to see or predict for the rest of this year. So, further ado, let’s take a close look at how the automated web testing landscape will transform in the near future.

Hyper Automation

Yes, we’re already talking about automation when referring to automated web testing. However, the introduction of hyper automation takes things to a whole different level. It means making automation an active process that can learn from previous experiences. It means less manual work even for testers that will only have to make the necessary tweaks in the testing process so that the software knows how to go through the procedure from one end to another. Not only that hyper-automation helps with the automated testing procedures but it allows organizations to literally create a digital twin.

IoT Test Automation

Slowly, IoT becomes more and more present in our lives and it’s wonderful news since it should lead to better processes and easier interaction with various devices around the house or at the office. However, before IoT can become really widespread, it needs proper testing as well. With so many mechanical and digital objects interacting, the possibility of something going wrong is huge. So, the automated testing efforts will definitely increase in this area since before expanding IoT to the masses, it needs to deliver exactly the expected functionalities. Automated testing procedures are still being defined for IoT and it’s surely going to be something of interest in the upcoming years as well.

Autonomous Test Automation

Yep, it may seem like a Sci-Fi title, however, 2020 already brings us several examples of autonomous test automation. Using machine learning and artificial intelligence, the testing protocols change continuously. And they have reached a point in which completely automated testing has almost become a reality. In case you’re still not sure what autonomous test automation refers to, it’s a system that can create test cases and execute them with no need of human interaction whatsoever. We already have a good example of what autonomous automation testing can bring in test.ai a platform that uses AI bots to perform user experience testing and generate reports automatically.

Multi-Experience Testing

Looking at the trends in automated web testing, we couldn’t leave out multi-experience testing. Considered by many experts in this area the future of app development, mulţi-experience mostly refers to testing those apps of the future that will be available across multiple platforms. Since companies are already focusing on launching their apps and services on a wide range of devices such as smartphones, wearables, car modules, and more, testing all these interactions is a must. While there are some automated processes involved already, most of the testing from one platform to another is still done manually. So, developing automated processes for multi-experience testing is definitely going to be a major subject in the upcoming years.

The Democratization of the Automated Testing Process

It’s not a coincidence that we decided to talk about the democratization process in automated testing right after discussing the matter of multi-experience testing. In the brink of multi-experience development the problem of testing more and more devices in various cultural environments. This also leads to the democratization of automated testing since you will need a unified testing platform to make sure users in North Korea enjoy the same experience as the ones in the US. Of course, we’re leaving politics out with this article and assume both sets of users get access to the same apps that are designed to make life easier. Crowdsourced testing and scriptless testing tools are already paving the way for the democratization of the automated testing process.

It goes without saying that we didn’t cover all the automated testing that 2020 still has in store for us. Even though it hasn’t been the greatest of years from multiple points of view, technology won’t stop evolving. And it’s the same technology that can help with the way things are currently, provided enough testing is done so we can use all the apps and services brought forward to help us in all domains.
