When Some work is assigned to you so you have three option:

DO NOT do the work OR reassign/pass that to your colleague or subordinates.
DO the work but do it to just make it happen.
LIVE THE WORK.
If someone ask you a question, How importance do you give to your professional work assigned to you?

“Does it matter?”

Yes, Because your work will also give same importance to you.

“it is true, Really?”

Yes, it actually matter most in our professional life.

When you Use Option 1:

If you do not do the work and you pass it to your subordinates to complete the task. This makes one run away from core responsibilities. and a new chance to your subordinates to learn the senior level responsibility (Good for them but Worst for your professional growth).

When you Use Option 2:

if you Do the work just to make that happen, Google it paste the code, change the code run it somehow and deliver it to the client. What could be the result for it?

Best, It will work properly for the client as well but next time if any problem arise you won’t be able to handle it properly. what else, It could be either won’t work in real time environment will come back to you for re-work and re-work at that moment you won’t be able to change whole idea. so, this is also bad idea and I always tell my colleagues and juniors:

What I recommend is “LIVE THE WORK”.

How to live the work?

When a work is assigned to you. You think like the client. Think it is your work and responsibility and a new challenge to do it with even better way than last time you done it.

Think like, when next time anyone see your work, it should be The REFERENCE for them.

Internally or Externally is should be Perfect from yourself (as a client sight). If possible, Test your work as end user and remove most possible defects without hearing back from client.

Key features , how to follow “LIVE THE WORK” ?

First, Analyse the client requirements properly.
Understand the Scope / need of the work assigned to you.
Check All possible options to complete the work.
Discuss those options with colleague or seniors team members which will allow you to find some interesting solutions you might not have thought of.
and then, Work on the best possible solutions.
Do the work such a way it gives you a new learning and increase your capability and which will make you master of that work.
and Next time if same kind of work will come to you it will again be a new learning journey.

What are the advantage of “Living the work” ?

Your work will also give same importance to you from two ways.

When your work will go live or will be checked: it will show the perfection and will speak loud about your capabilities.
and You yourself will earn mastery of that particular work. and you know,
Nobody can steel your knowledge
