The Multiverse: What it is, its Benefits and Role in Helping Build the Metaverse

Multiverse is the collection of parallel universes that comprise all of reality in some quantum mechanical and cosmological theories. In terms of physics, the multiverse is the hypothesis that many universes exist within each other and are theoretically visitable, but currently not attainable. In terms of the Metaverse, the Multiverse is something far more tangible, and interactive.

People can interact with digital things in the virtual environment of the Metaverse. To access the Metaverse, people must construct digital avatars that they control within the Metaverse. The Metaverse is sometimes referred to as being nicer successor to the internet. It is essentially a vast virtual environment made up of permanent, 3D worlds generated in real-time. The Metaverse can be experienced by an infinite number of users at the same time, each in their own unique way. In comparison, the Multiverse, while not yet fully defined, can be viewed as a collection of different and separate Metaverse habitats that can be entered as desired. It’s kinda like the physics notion of the Multiverse where each Metaverse is discrete but there is the potential for crossing between them.

But doesn’t this mean that the multiverse is just another form of the Metaverse? Well, no actually. There are some key differences between the two, which helps define them. For a start, the Metaverse is one shared virtual environment while the Multiverse is a collection of many Metaverse environments. The metaverse is all linked together, but the multiverse is made up of many different environments. In the metaverse, users can own their digital assets, but in the multiverse, users won't be able to own their interests in different ecosystems. Those three factors make the Metaverse and Multiverse decidedly different beasts, but they are both going to enrich how we use online environments.

So, the Multiverse is a group of different digital places, each with its own traits. These online places are different and stand on their own. So, you can also play, connect, learn, and do other things in the Multiverse, but you will do these things in separate ecosystems instead of on a single platform. Digital spaces like social media sites, multiplayer video games, and online games are already a part of the Multiverse. This distinction means that we have some fundamental differences between the two forms. Let’s have a closer look at each of those

- The number of environments in the metaverse and the multiverse is one of the biggest differences between the two. Many people think that they both have more than one digital place, but this is not true. The metaverse is just one digital world where people can hang out with their friends and family, play, shop, learn, and work, all in the same place. The Multiverse, on the other hand, is a group of different digital places, each with its own traits and characteristics. Any game with more than one person or social media site can be thought of as part of the Multiverse.
- The role of virtual properties. When comparing the Metaverse and the Multiverse, virtual assets and ownership are definitely a part of the equation. The Multiverse is made up of many different virtual worlds that are all separate from each other. Most of the time, a single entity owns one of these places. So, the said entity, or company, owns all of your information, assets, and events. In the Multiverse, you can make or buy new goods in different worlds, but you can't get the value you want from them. For instance, you couldn't use the collectibles you found in one game to buy goods in another game. On the other hand, users can take full ownership of and control over their belongings in the Metaverse. This is best illustrated with NFTs. People who take part in the metaverse own all of the NFTs and other things they make there. They could also trade their goods on other Metaverse sites.
- Included Entities. The entities that exist in the Metaverse and the Multiverse are very different from one another. Because the Multiverse is made up of many different virtual worlds that are all different and disconnected from each other, it's hard to say for sure what kinds of things are in it. In other words, the things that are part of the Multiverse will depend on each virtual world and what makes it special.
- Inherent connectivity. The way that the parts of the Metaverse and Multiverse are ordered and linked is another difference. The number of ecosystems in each of these two notions is different, so the order and flow of their connections are also different.  Since the metaverse is one virtual world, there is a lot of information flowing through it in a coherent way. By comparison, the connections in the Multiverse are random, and there is no set order in which information flows. This is because all of the virtual worlds in the universe are different and cannot communicate with each other.

The Metaverse and Multiverse are different entities – even in the Multiverse is currently largely notional rather than a reality – and tech commentators are unsure about how they are going to coexist, or even if they ever can. So, what do the Metaverse and the universe have in store for the future? Some commentators say that the Metaverse could grow big enough to wipe out the multiverse in the future, while others think that they will both still exist as the metaverse grows into a parallel virtual world.

At this point in time, it's clear that many companies are trying to make a Metaverse space for their customers by mixing virtual reality, augmented reality, brain-computer interfaces, and other technologies. But the Multiverse may offer even more opportunities for both business and social interaction. It's exciting to think that the future of the Metaverse-Multiverse is right around the corner! We at Unity Developers are going to be right here, helping you keep up with the latest developments.
