My Journey

My Journey

I have always had an interest in computer science throughout my life. Being exposed at an early age, due to one of my older siblings being extremely involved in all things technological, I continually found myself flung into random discussions about the core principles of computer programming.

My first experience with any sort of computer programming was with an enormous book my brother gifted me on a programming language called Python. I quickly dived in and even more quickly became completely and utterly lost.

This was something completely different than anything I had ever tried to learn. I tried very hard to understand all of the technical and theoretical ins and outs of an object oriented programming approach that my brother was teaching me, but, after a while, I became bored and uninterested because of my misunderstanding of what he was showing me.

Within the next seven years, I went on to attempt a career in the restaurant business. I continually found myself thinking about those things my brother had so desperately tried to teach me.

Soon, I became so curious again that I actually opened up the book on Python out of my own free will and started searching for answers to the millions of questions I had.

This time was different.

I was excited, willing, and actually successful in my second attempt at grasping some of the basic principles of object oriented programming using a wonderfully constructed language.

This spurred me on so much that I decided to attend a local community college and study computer science within an institutional setting. This was a struggle for me, and, after being forced to take many seemingly redundant courses in biology, social studies, and geography (etc.), I quit and settled for a simple, some would argue useless, Associate of Science Transfer degree leading to nowhere.

But I had a vision.

I challenged myself to find a way to learn what I loved without spending copious amounts of money. Every second I spent attending one of the many classes unrelated to my degree I died a little inside.

The knowledge alone that I could be spending that very second discovering and learning new things within the subject I came to learn in the first place killed me.

I could be collaborating and soaking in the experience of working with the many like minded peers and mentors attending and teaching at the very same institution.

But, sadly, instead I was left feeling stuck, attending the classes deemed necessary by a greedy, money driven institution to earn an overpriced gold star and pat on the back.

Needless to say, I struck out on my own, and with pen, paper, and a cheap computer with internet access, I studied hard and utilized my greatest ally in this crazy world of coding: Google.

I am happy to report now that things are better than ever and I have successfully found my place in the world of software development. Currently working within a small web development firm, I have big dreams of starting my own business developing world class web based applications.
