Help with mentoring

Published Dec 02, 2020

Hello, I am looking for advice on my situation.

CONTEXT:
My younger sister is beginning her comp. sci. (associates) degree which is super exciting. She has the opportunity to choose either Java or C++. In asking developer friends what they suggest the answer typically falls in line with what they do.

However, one of them followed up with "what does she want to do?" and my quick response was "does anyone know what they want to do in the beginning of comp. sci.?" He went on to explain that he had a good mentor that helped guide him, even before his degree, to know what he wanted to do with his comp. sci. degree.

QUESTION:
How would you guys recommend I go over the different over arching options that she has down the line when she graduates? I know a lot of this will come with internships/co-ops/first-few-jobs but it most definitely can't hurt to go over some options. ie, she realizes she loves the idea of full stack or front end and tailors her learning towards that, or maybe she realizes she wants to do embedded work and wants to tailor everything to the low level work etc.

Any suggestions/guidance would be appreciated!
