Some consider DevOps an organization wide mantra, while others consider it a formal role in the organization. Whatever your stance is, there is no-doubt that DevOps is an important and fundamental piece to the IT environment that is becoming more and more common even for small companies and individuals. My personal stance is that DevOps is a hybrid of organization wide initiatives to improve communication and tooling along with an individual role to oversee and steer the organization in a positive direction. The tooling that is used is very much unique to the organization but the general idea remains the same. Communication, Automation, Security and Change Management. If you're a Systems Admin or DevOps guy/gal then you have no-doubt worked with AWS. There are many great cloud providers out there, but none have the extensive capability that AWS has. Learning and using AWS effectively can be a gigantic feeling task, but it really is not as difficult as some make it out to be. Most of what you need to know is simply what each service does, the role it plays and when to use it. Master that and you're almost there. Amazon AWS truly is a one-of-a-kind platform that all other cloud providers strive to emulate. By working in this environment you will gain invaluable experience in how to handle common situations and plan your application or architecture with best practices in mind. I encourage both developers and ops folks to further their understanding of AWS by working towards an AWS certification. Doing so not only gives you a comprehensive understanding of the platform in general but also gives you an edge up on others who may be in the running for a job or project. My level of experience with AWS not only comprises the architecture side but I have also worked extensively on building and improving applications in both the AWS platform and multi-cloud architectures.
