When to consider a freelance contractor for your Ivanti Neurons ITSM/ITAM system

If you would have asked that question 28 years ago, the answer would likely have been quite different. You see ITSM has come a long way since the early Helpdesk days. Back then most helpdesk systems were very basic ticket systems that recorded employee information, symptoms, ticket categories, and allowed you to prioritize and assign tickets. Sure you had some basic business automations like alerts and escalations, and perhaps even some scheduled reports.

Today's ITSM systems are far more complex and offer an abundance of functionality, features, workflows, configurations, and automations. Take the Ivanti ITSM product for example. Back when I first installed the HEAT for Windows systems, your typical implementation was just a couple weeks. Compare that to today and Ivanti Neurons for ITSM (aka Ivanti Service Manager) implementations barely scratch the surface in two weeks. Implementations, workflows, business process optimization, and automations can take weeks or month, depending on how much experience your consultant has. Hands-on experience. Classroom training and certifications are nice to have but fall quite short of the real world

When and why should you consider a freelance contractor for your ITSM implementation?

Today's complex ITSM/ITAM systems require a specialized skill set and expertise to advise and consult you. Often vendors and their business partners are in the business of sales, which includes "professional services" that are nothing more than a very good salesperson (account manager) that sells services and resources (project manager, senior consultation, junior consultant), etc.

This is actually the primary reason I decided to go on my own and provide freelance consulting, development, project management services for the Ivanti Neurson for ITSM/ITAM products.

While you'd think there is power in numbers and a team can in theory be quicker and better, the reality is quite different. How do I know that? Experience. From mid-size to multi-national powerhouses in 10+ countries, when theory and practice meet, the outcome is always better with one seasoned main point of contact who wears many hats. I discovered this early on when consulting with top companies in Canada and the US with a leading Frontrange Business Partner and several Ivanti Business Partners. The model is not unlike fast food franchises with corporate and franchise locations competing and concerned with sales and bottom line. Meanwhile, the best fast food you can get from the ma & pa fast food place.

You see, having a team is great, but just how many chefs do you need in the kitchen? And how experienced is your chef? 1 year? 2 years? 5 years? 10 years? 15 years? Honestly, 15 years is not enough. 1 implementation? 2 implementations? 5, 10? 15? Honestly, 15 is not enough. Experience cannot be taught and the problem with large teams is the same you face in governments. Red tape. Too many managers. Too many meetings. Lackluster disappointing, and slow (and often few) results with ballooning project costs.

**You should consider a freelance consultant **at pretty much any stage of your project. Whether you're implementing a new system, upgrading your system, improving your system, streamlining workflows, and maintenance.

After all, you don't know what you don't know and in my experience, the answer you get from the big software vendors and their business partners is usually No... it can't be done. or it will be too expensive. This is usually when I come in. Every few weeks I get an inquiry from a client asking me, can our Ivanti Neurons for ITSM/ITAM system do x. How long will it take to do y. Clients are usually amazed that I say yes when everyone else says no. The reality is that a seasoned freelancer with experience trumps any team of so-called senior consultants.
