Web3 is a booming technology, but for someone new to it, you may be asking “What is Web3?” All these talks about blockchain and Web3, crypto, and NFT’s might seem confusing. In this talk, we will explore and demystify some of the key concepts and building blocks of the Web3 scene.

### What is blockchain?
Blockchain is a distributed data shared among nodes—a fancy term for computers—on a network. Imagine it being a gigantic database shared amongst computers all over the world, and they’re all keeping track of the data in those blockchains. The complex datas are all linked by puzzles, where each of the blocks fit together in a specific way. It’s a very large linked list. The consensus of the blockchain makes it difficult for anyone to go and change the history or add malicious transactions to the blockchain. It’s a permissionless source of trust where we can house different types of data. 


### How do we interact with blockchain? What is a crypto wallet?
We can interact with blockchains through wallet when you invest in blockchain. It’ll show you how much digital assets and cryptocurrency you own, in a certain chain, but what wallets really do is they give you a value pair, a public key and private key. The public key is an address where others can identify you on a blockchain, and the private key is what allows you to actually interact with the blockchain. With cryptocurrency, the blockchain is the distributed ledger, and what we can do is keep track of different transactions and coins that get transferred between people. Think about it as a key to the blockchain that shows you the assets that you own that live on the blockchain.


Using the Ethereum blockchain as an example, to perform a transaction, you’ll have to pay a base fee and a tip that you’d give to the miner and validate that on the blockchain. This incentivizes web3 developers and miners to keep the nodes running in a distributed manner all across the globe and keep the data valid. The other transaction is called signing and approving transaction. Using Ethereum again, you can sign or approve different records of transactions and this doesn’t cost any money. You can use a cryptographic hash to sign in from your blockchain wallet to prove it’s you who’s interacting with the blockchain and we can use the hash value to sign into a decentralized application. You’d be able to experience a true single sign on to take across any number of decentralized finance applications. 


### How do you start building NFTs and other tokens?
The first thing is to understand the languages that are good to know in the web3 space. First off, it’s Solidity, very important for EVM based blockchains like Ethereum and Polygon. It’s what will help you to write the smart contract that can be executed on the blockchain. The other two languages to know are JavaScript and Python. Many of the tools that exist in the web3 space that help you build and get stuff onto the blockchain are built with JavaScript and are JavaScript-based tools. There are also an increasing number of tools being built in Python. Web2 and full-stack development is still necessary in the web3 space, and if you want to get in as a frontend developer, you can start there and learn solidity after the fact.


Some common tools include Hardhat, Remix IDE, and Ethers JS/Web3 JS/Wagmi. Hardhat is a development environment for writing, testing, and deploying smart contracts. Remix IDE is an online IDE for writing and deploying smart contracts in your browser. And last but not least, Ethers JS/Web3 JS/Wagmi are tools that will help you interact with the blockchain from your frontend.
